highlight the statuary, these being; the ‘Winged Victory’, Sphinxes, the Townley Venus
and the Caryatids.

The limpidity of the water, which the 9 Duke was emphatic to see, combined with the
corresponding reflections, give rise (in his words) to ‘a certain air’.
