Approach to Painting:
When I am engaged in the process of painting I become totally absorbed by my subject matter, which has become more
inclusive over the years. I also study the great artists from any age and have a particular affinity with the Impressionist and
Post Impressionist movements because of their use of natural light and dynamic brushstrokes. I constantly search out
museums and art galleries for any good works of art to enjoy, experience and learn from, whatever the genre or method
employed.
Painting is to me a continuous pattern of striving for perfection and variety and each work is unique and individual.
The joy of painting is in the process I believe; from the first conception of an idea to completion and it involves many stages
of emotional and physical engagement with the subject matter.
There are no restrictions on my methods of expression as I embrace either the beauty of the natural world or a still life
painting using an Impressionist style or a personal, human or mystical narrative explored using a more Symbolistic
approach.
Although my styles may echo those from previous masters, I feel that I have, over time, developed my own unique way of
painting which I would describe as a synthesis of Impressionist/Post Impressionist style , but with an English sensibility.
I choose the method, materials and size according to what suits the mood of the subject I feel compelled to portray.
This will depend on whether the work requires calm and serene, powerful, mysterious, or naturally dynamic brushstrokes.
The human psyche holds many treasures and ways to portray feelings and thoughts. For both the creator and the observer
there are hidden personal reflections to be revealed. I believe art depicting the natural world, including humankind, has the
potential to engage in this way.
