An Enduring Vision
In 1906, Violet the 8th Duchess of Rutland was instrumental in
revising Elizabeth’s Italian hillside setting of the early 1800’s, by
creating a Rose Garden on the Top Terrace in the Italian School
aesthetic this was the height of fashion at that time.
Violet also restructured the Statue Garden and Lower Garden,
thereby creating a grass walk to the Wild Wood (now the Spring
and Japanese Gardens.)
Violet was completely sympathetic to Elizabeth’s vision for
Belvoir; as an accomplished artist and sculptor, Violet revised the
castle interior in order to accommodate modern life.
