The afternoon light accentuates the dramatic effect of the blazing autumn colours
and grand scale of Queen Pool. The distant Triumphant Gate commissioned by
Sarah the first Duchess as a lasting memorial, was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor
and constructed in 1723. The centre island was originally part of the old causeway
leading to the Royal Manor of Woodstock.
