AN INTERVIEW WITH BRIAN & LAURIE MCARDLE
PROUD HOMEOWNERS ON BROOKBEND ROAD SINCE 2011
WHAT MADE YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH 267 BROOKBEND ROAD?
About 6 years ago, we decided we'd like to be closer to town but didn't want to give up having space or
property but thought for sure we'd have to give up being in a neighborhood. For years I drove past Winton Park
and had no idea that it was such a hidden gem. I thought Brookbend Rd was a little private dead end road. Our
realtor suggested that we take a look at a house in the neighborhood and we fell in love instantly! It is the perfect
location and our property is one of the prettiest in the neighborhood. It truly is unique because you are in town, close
to school but yet have an acre and a half that allows fantastic street presence AND a private large backyard AND a classic
spacious home.
PLEASE DESCRIBE THE RENOVATION PROCESS ...
While we found the perfect neighborhood and property here, we quickly realized that to really get the home we were
dreaming of, we would have to start from scratch. It was an amazing process from design to construction. J. Tallman
Builders were the perfect fit for us, delivering a top of the line custom home with many details that truly set our home apart.
This is not a cookie cutter home but is one that will grow with a young family and provide many options through the years.
ARE YOU HAPPY THAT YOU PUT IN A POOL?
YES! We had a pool at our previous home and it is the perfect center piece for this spacious, private backyard. All our kids
(even the ones who have moved out) and their friends love to come over enjoy hot summer afternoons hanging around
the pool. Brian and I love even just sitting by the pool from April until mid-October. Having the safety cover and heater
allows us to open it early and keep it open late. The pool is also great for entertaining and makes a perfect center piece
around which to set up for big party!
WHY ARE YOU MOVING?
We have had so much fun and created so many special memories here in this house over the last 5 years. When
we built, we really thought that we would be here for a long time but sometimes situations change and so it
makes sense to re-evaluate. With our youngest off to college and the rest moved out, we are looking forward
to the flexibility of doing more traveling and spending much more time at our FL condo and skiing in VT. So, as
bittersweet as it is, we don't need to have such a big house here anymore.
WILL YOU MISS THE NEIGHBORS?
We have great neighbors on all sides! It is wonderful to have young kids next door and so fun to watch! Brings
back memories of when ours were that young. We will really miss putting our turkey in the oven and walking
down to the Grant's on Thanksgiving to deep fry a Cajun spiced second turkey, while sipping Baily's & enjoying
their fire pit!
TELL ME ABOUT THE GROUNDS ...
Like the rest of Winton Park, our property is spacious and park-like. It's hard to believe you are only a 10 minute
stroll into the center of town and 4 doors up from the high school! The backyard is entirely fenced in for the pool
with a combination of decorative fencing to the driveway and road, and then deer fencing across the back that
seems to disappear and feel completely open! It makes it easy to let the kids and dog out to play!
WHAT MAKES YOUR LOT SO SPECIAL?
Our house sits perfectly a top a hill at the middle of the "bend" in Brookbend Road which gives it a stunning road front
presence. The front yard is spacious and park like to the sides and elegant in the middle. We have created beautiful whimsical
lilac hedged garden areas on either side of the front door. These hedges bloom purple in the spring, green in the summer, fire
red in the fall and look stunning covered with fresh fallen snow in the winter!
