AN INTERVIEW WITH THE HOMEOWNER
Many years before I moved to Fairfield I fell in love with the beach area. When I decided to
move there, I loved the drive from town down Beach Road past beautiful Town Hall and the
historic houses. When I reach the island, I love the approach to my house. Every day that I drive
down Beach Road, I think about how beautiful it is. When I saw my house for the first time, I
loved the lines of it, the covered entry and the corner windows. The house was deceiving from
the outside. The upstairs dormered area created 2 very large upstairs bedrooms, each with its
own full bath. The house is bright & open and the property is beautiful.
When I moved into the house, I loved the sun room, but I wanted to be able to it all year. The
sun room has been my favorite part of the house. It is warm and sunny all winter. I also wanted
to create a big luxurious bedroom with lots of closet space. I decided to open the wall
between 2 smaller bedrooms to create a large master bedroom.
I have loved living in my house for the last 24 years. Now I'm almost 90 years old and I would
like to move closer to my daughter who lives in Boston.
I will miss the neighbors very much. I have made strong ties to the immediate neighbors & to
the Fairfield community. There's something special about the people who choose to live in the
beach area. People are so friendly, there’s always someone, walking by with or without
children or a dog, some running, some bicycling. The neighbors are active and its always fun &
social to be out in the yard. I will miss the Luminaria during the holidays and the fireworks.
I've spent hours over the years trimming and mowing my lawn. The property is open, sunny and
easy to take care of. The backyard is fully fenced in and level and a great place to play catch
with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
When I moved in, the walkway to the beach was a path with weeds and litter. I learned from
the League of Women Voters that it was possible to adopt a spot. I talked to some neighbors
who loved the idea of working together to create the Beach Garden. We talked to the town
of Fairfield and Public Works helped clear the area and provide mulch. The entire
neighborhood helped support the project with donations of plants & flowers. Almost 20 years
later, it is still a beautiful garden and a unifying neighborhood project. I have also been a
volunteer every Friday at the Food Pantry for Operation Hope for the last 24 years.
