AN INTERVIEW WITH THE HOMEOWNER
88 Godfrey is a magical space. As a musician, I was struck by the positive energy and
memories of the property from the second I stood on the small hill facing the main house.
From there, the next thing we did was bring our guitars into the barn and we're blown
away by the acoustics. Good acoustics mean everything. Since then, the barn has
hosted dozens of parties for our friends and members of the community. I've written four
albums here and my first novel and screenplay; the house oozes creativity, peace and
relaxation. For us, Godfrey didn't need much but its had tons to offer. The prior residents'
daughter was married at the gazebo and the back yard offers its own private entrance
to a 1700 acre natural preserve. The house is warm and cozy while at the same time
providing ample space for every member of your family to stretch their wings in whatever
way their hearts desire.
In the work we felt was necessary at Godfrey, we sought to maintain the integrity of the
foundation of the home, the 1890's barn. We renovated the master bedroom and bath
sourcing reclaimed mixed board wood from Tennessee. We custom designed a large
zen shower and added the claw foot tub for a relaxing soak. In the lower level we added
a summer kitchen, also used for extended stays with friends and relatives. We took
advantage of CT's energy efficiency program, added smart grid for the barn and also
hooked up a generator to keep things online when the power is out.
Our potential goals for Godfrey included a natural pool and an obstacle course and
mountain biking track in the back 1 1/2 acres. We've looked at planting fruit trees or
putting a solar array in the front privacy acre. You'll see there is plenty of room for your
imagination to stretch on what's possible here. For one of our first party's, we had a 75ft
slip-n-slide running down the hill off the deck.
