AN INTERVIEW WITH HARRIET MORGAN
PROUD HOMEOWNER ON HEMLOCK HILLS SOUTH SINCE 1979
WHAT MADE YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH 241 HEMLOCK HILLS SOUTH?
We saw this house when it was still under construction. We loved the woodsy setting.
There was so much outdoor space for the children to explore and play in and so much
indoor space for the whole family. We liked the look and layout that wasn't a typical
center-hall colonial. We met the builder, who had started in construction as a mason,
which explains the many fireplaces and very solid construction. He took real pride in his
work and worked to help us make the house ours. The location was convenient and the
schools were good, too. We were sold.
WHY ARE YOU MOVING?
The house was my mother's favorite place to live ever, but she turns 90 this year and couldn't
live alone there any longer. We all hope the next owners will love the place, too.
WILL YOU MISS THE NEIGHBORS?
The neighbors have always been nice. People see each other walking the dogs or just for
exercise, and they help each other out. There have always been children of a mix of ages,
from little ones to babysitters to college kids coming back on breaks. People get to know
each other in Greenfield Hill, which makes it a wonderful place to move to and stay.
TELL ME ABOUT THE GROUNDS ...
The grounds have woods, a brook, grass, landscaped shrubs and flowers, flowering
trees, and both a deck and a patio behind. My parents loved eating lunch at a small
table on the patio behind the house, with a bird feeder nearby. The evergreen
between the big kitchen window and the patio is great for birds, which makes for
constant fun viewing from the kitchen table. We had a family of wild turkeys one year
and an owl who would stop on the deck at night another year. The woods and brook
at the front are also great to watch through the seasons: The brook begins to babble
in the spring, bright green plants poke up, then fill out, and sometimes there are wild
blackberries to pick in summer.
WHAT MAKES YOUR LOT SO SPECIAL?
We are close to the Merritt Parkway, Black Rock turnpike stores, and Burr Street for
schools and downtown, yet the lot feels private and in the woods. We can walk in
the afternoon or evening and say hello to neighbors, so it isn't too isolated, either.
The lot is great for playing in any season. Before the plow came on a snow day, the
neighborhood kids would sled down the driveway. When we wanted even more nature,
or truly wonderful nature education for the children, we could walk to the Connecticut
Audubon Society. The children loved playing on the trails and, as high schoolers,
volunteering with the injured animals who live there.
