The Hydros UI team from the University of Indonesia (UI) represented Indonesia and Asia at the sixth Monaco Solar & Energy Challenge earlier in July.
Hydros UI was one of the 34 teams from around the world participating in the challenge, held in collaboration with the International Powerboating Federation (UIM) and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.
The challenge requires the boats to compete in a race, and among the teams competing in the newly launched Energy Class, Hydros UI was awarded the Spirit Prize that recognizes them for being determined and highly motivated.
Comprising 14 students from UI’s school of engineering, it reportedly designed a catamaran with a strong, durable propeller system using a 5 kilowatt per hour battery that is considered an environmentally friendly source of energy.
The catamaran design is also equipped with solar panels to store power and enable high speeds.

Hydros UI team chairman Bayu Anugerah said in a statement made available to kompas.com that the team’s boat has a 10kW electric engine and a cockpit made of carbon fiber.
“[The boat] is lighter compared to those made of steel and wood, but its power is on par with the ones made of steel,” Bayu was quoted as saying. Furthermore, the lightness of the cockpit will contribute to faster acceleration and higher maximum speed. (nic/mut)
