Grammar: The Sequence of Tenses.
Reported Speech.
Grammar Reference: The Sequence of Tenses.
The sequence of the tenses must be kept in mind. This is a rule that
states that the tense of the verb in the subordinate clause, follows the tense
of the verb in the principal (main) clause: if there is a use of Past Tense in
the principal clause, it must be followed by a Past Tense in the subordinate
clause.
Yesterday we met doctor Frank, he told us that he had his own clinic
and invited us to visit it.
The receptionist said they had no rooms available.
The secretary told us that the director had signed the documents the day
before.
They knew they had made the right choice.
Mary promised she would come to see us soon.
The teacher said the exam would be difficult.
