A. BACKGROUND
In learning a language knowing the vocabulary is very important. It is like
yarn to a cloth; we can only make a complete cloth if we have a yarn to
sew. It is the same in mastering the language, we can make a sentence if
only we have the vocabulary to arrange, and furthermore make more
sentences and be fluent in speaking as well as writing. Thornbury (2002)
ever stated in his book, “Without grammar, little can be conveyed,
without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed.”. It shows that vocabulary
is crucial and underlies everything in learning English.
Learning English here also includes the learning process in the class,
specifically for grade X at SMAN 1 Ciranjang. In order to convey and
master the English material, the student needs to have a wide knowledge
of vocabulary. Especially, because the material listed in the syllabus of
Sekolah Penggerak Curriculum consists of several English texts such as
narrative text, procedure text, exposition text, recount text, and report
text. The goal of learning these text is to make the student to be able to
understand and write each text by their own selves.
Based on the observation that was done by the researcher, most of the
students of grade X do have not much English vocabulary knowledge.
Therefore, most of the students hardly to understand the full explanation
of the material of each text. Moreover, the explanation is delivered in
English most of the time, it makes it twice as hard for the student to
catch the explanation. This lead to another problem, which most of the
student are easier to get distracted and bored, they tend to be passive
easily during the class and make the student even further from mastering
the material. Thus, the main goal which writing a text is difficult to be
reached. That is why there should be a specific session to learn about
vocabulary.
