ATTILA KONNYU (B. 1963)
Attila Konnyu is an artist following in the steps of New or Contemporary Informel. He was born in Budapest where he studied architecture at Ybl Miklos University and worked with Hungarian Television (MTV and MAFILM Budapest). His early fascination with the art of Abstract Expressionists brought him to the School of Art of Miklos Kolozsvari Grandpierre. Upon his meeting with the Tachisme (derived from the French word tache, stain) artists he held in high regard, Karel Appel (CoBrA group) and Emil Schumacher, Konnyu departed on his journey of new gestural painting with a sometime calligraphic aspect as a way of his self-expression.
Attila Konnyu’s Sculpture: Konnyu’s in uence of Henry Moore is apparent yet he is taking the abstract shapes further, for his are gestural abstractions, where the material is being shaped by hand, by modeling, working out the shapes in clay, at times even leaving the ngerprints behind. This process gives his works an organic feeling. The abstract shapes may reference human or animal gures and Konnyu distorts and breaks up the form, sometimes he leaves it behind altogether. The undulating form cast in bronze interprets the appearing thing in its essence.
Konnyu developed his international reputation by travelling throughout Europe, Asia and America, where his work has been exhibited in a number of galleries. He resides in Palm Beach, Florida, USA.
