We are now into the full swing of fall, having celebrated the start of autumn on September 22. October brings us numerous observances and activities to participate in. There are month long celebrations and weekly celebrations. Today, I want to focus on just 3 of them.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. An annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. An Early Detection Plan enables you to be proactive about your health by reminding you to do monthly breast self-exams and schedule clinical breast exams and mammograms. Some habits that can help reduce your risk of breast cancer are:
- Maintain a healthy weight. - Stay physically active
- Eat fruits and vegetables
- Do not smoke
- Limit alcohol consumption

Fire prevention is such an important aspect of our lives.
National Fire Prevention Month. Fire Prevention Week is observed the week in October that includes October 9, to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, not with festivities but as a way to keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention. The Great Chicago Fire started the night of October 8, 1871 but did the most damage on October 9. While the Chicago Fire is the best known, it wasn’t even the biggest fire to occur that day. That distinction belongs to the Peshtigo Fire in Northeastern Wisconsin. It is still the most devastating forest fire in American history, burning 16 towns, killing 1,152 people and scorching 1.2 million acres. Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record. This year Fire Prevention Week is from October 4-10 and the theme is “Don’t Wait, Check the Date”, reminding us to check the expiration date on our smoke alarms. Check the fire safety tips below – how safe is your home or apartment:
- Do you have working smoke alarms?
- If battery operated, have you changed the batteries in the last 12 months?
- Do you clean the dryer lint filter before each use?
- Are you connecting too many items to an extension cord?
- Do you have extension cords running under furniture, carpet or doors?
- If you have a fireplace, has the chimney been cleaned recently?
- Do you leave unattended cooking regularly?
- Do you have flammables objects too close to a fireplace opening, portable heaters or candles?
- Do you have an escape plan and have you practiced it in the last 12 months?
October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month. We are certainly appreciative that there is a month-long period set aside to make the public aware of this condition but for many of us, every day is a chance to promote Down syndrome awareness. Our six year old grandson, Noah, was born with Down syndrome, and we marvel at his development every time we see him. Having a grandchild with Down syndrome has changed our lives – our lives are brighter, filled with love and admiration for Noah’s
