EMV Chip Card Technology now available at CSB
EMV credit cards are now available to customers at Citizens State Bank. Also called
“chip cards”, EMV cards were developed by
Europay, Mastercard and Visa (thus the EMV).
Each chip card is embedded with a small gold
computer chip on its surface, which contains
a microprocessor programmed with enhanced security protocols to help protect cardholder data. Chip cards add a new level of security that is meant to protect consumers from fraud at the register.
Chip cards will eventually completely replace conventional magnetic stripe cards, which have been around since the 1960s. It’s no secret that magnetic stripe cards are prone to being counterfeited, which is why they’re being phased out. By contrast, chip cards contain proprietary technology that is difficult to replicate and expensive to produce, making them an impractical prospect for scammers.

Many merchants who have made the switch to EMV technology have also incorporated NFC, or Near Field Communication payments; this is what allows shoppers to pay at the register by holding up their smartphones. Many stores are upgrading to pay terminals that are compatible with both EMV and NFC technology. Indeed, you will soon need to get used to the fact that you’ll no longer “swipe and go;” the new terminals require you to instead insert your card into a slot, in what’s referred to as the “chip and dip.”
