Corner, Cont. from page 5 Other celebrations include:
• Cinco de Mayo (May 5), an observance of the Mexican culture, heritage and experi- ences of those with a Mexican ancestry, much like St. Patrick’s Day and Oktoberfest are used to celebrate those of Irish and German ancestry.
• National Nurses Week (May 6 - 12) celebrates the profession of nursing and honors those who have dedi- cated their lives to patient care. They are an integral part of the health system, whether in hospitals, nursing homes, hospice, home care or physician offices.
• Mother’s Day (May 8) –
what more need be said – other than wishing my lovely bride the most wonderful day. Today not just honors mothers but recognizes motherhood and the influ- ences of mothers to our soci- ety.
• Armed Forces Day (May 21) is a day to pay tribute to the men and women who serve in the Armed Forces of the United States, especially those serving in foreign lands away from their families.
• Memorial Day (May 30) is a day to honor and remember all the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Many families also honor their deceased relatives by visiting their graves at the cemetery. Memorial Day is often consid- ered the unofficial start of the summer vacation period that typically ends on Labor Day. With all the snow days the schools had this year; the end of school will be well into June.
