CUPPING: What in the world is it!
Dr. Glenn Smith AIH Complementary Medicine
Cupping therapy has been around for centuries, but is a hot topic lately because several Olympic athletes are turn- ing towards this alternative method for healing.
You may have seen the circular red marks that the process leaves. Cupping is done using glass, ceramic, lex- an or silicon cups to create suction.
The cups can stay in one place and target a specific area, or may be moved around for a massaging feeling. This process relieves tension and helps with sore muscles and inflammation, which is why some say cupping is good for everyone, not just Olympians!
Cupping Therapy is an ancient form of alternative medi- cine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. People get it for many purposes, including help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage.
Therefore, this therapy can benefit conditions such as headaches, asthma, fibromyalgia, muscle spasms, anxiety, to name a few.
Cupping therapy might be trendy now, but it’s not new. It dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures. One of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, describes how the ancient Egyptians used cupping therapy in 1,550 B.C.
Physiologically, cupping is thought to draw blood to the affected area, reducing soreness and speeding healing of overworked muscles. Athletes who use it swear by it, say- ing it keeps them injury free and speeds recovery.
Whereas massage pushes down on a muscle, cupping creates a negative pressure and lifts and separates the af- fected tissue bringing blood and chi, (vital energy), to the area.
Though it looks like it, cupping is not uncomfortable! It is very relaxing and some people actually fall asleep dur- ing the procedure. The positive affects can last for days. The discoloration typically disappears in a few days.
This therapy should be performed by a professional to be safe and fully affective.
Dr Glenn Smith is the only fully Traditional Chinese Medi- cine, (TCM), trained physician in this area. His training in- cludes acupuncture, Chinese herbs, Tui Na etc.
Cupping therapy treatments usually take 15 minutes to _ hour to perform. The cost is very reasonable. Please call the office for details.
