43CONTEMPLATE the pervasive silence of the Nxai Pan National Park, part of the
larger Makgadikgadi complex, itself a series of pans that seasonally attracts wildlife.
This lesser visited park (though a mere 200 kilometres from Maun) is a drawcard for tourists wishing to remove themselves from the busier parks and reserves in northern Botswana. Game viewing is seasonal and depends on if and when the rains occur, and when the animals migrate.
The area is frequented by large herds of bull elephants, as well as giraffe, impala, springbok, gemsbok, zebra, wildebeest, hartebeest, lion and hyena, amongst others. It is prime cheetah terrain, and the sight of this magnificent cat on the African plains is indeed awesome.

52SINK your feet into the saddle stirrups as your camel mount rather suddenly and clumsily
gets to its feet, to start you on an experience of a lifetime – a camel ride through the dunes of the Kalahari!
The annual Khawa Dune Challenge and Cultural Festival is a spectacular community-based event organised by Botswana Tourism Organisation, in conjunction with the Ministry of Youth, Empowerment, Sport and Culture and Botswana Motor Sport, and in collaboration with the Kgalagadi District Council.
This popular event drawing thousands of local and regional tourists is held annually, usually during the cooler winter months,
in the remotely situated village of Khawa, deep in the Kalahari Desert, in the extreme southwest of the country. It is family-oriented, offering quad and motor bike challenges, visual arts exhibitions, motorbike stunts, camel rides, cultural activities and quad fun rides.
A money spinner for communities in the Tsabong region, locals are encouraged to offer services, everything from food stalls to campsite rentals.
TIP
HOTODunes and Nxai Pan’s artificial watering hole is an
important water source and hence a magnet
for wildlife from afar, especially in the dry
season. Spend a lot of time here and you will
be rewarded with many photo opportunities.
