Camp as a Noun
Oscar Wilde is inextricably linked to the defintion of Camp, andthe concept of a dandy. He is most famous for writing novels like The Picture of Dorian Gray, and becoming the era’s premiere aeshtete. His self styled dandiness, using luxurious accessories like peacock feathers was known far and wide.
In 1895, Wilde was sentenced to two years in prison for homosexualtiy and was found was found guilty of
“gross indecency”. Wilde helped popularize the concept of Camp in high society.
