Camp as a Verb
The first known usage of the word Camp comes from the famous French playwright Moliere in his 1671 play
The Impostures of Scapin. Scapin, a servant, must disguise himself to scam his way into money. He is told to “Camp about on one leg. Put your hand on your hip. Wear a furious look. Strut about like a drama king.” Moliere is referencing the attitude of King Louis XIV. Camp was everywhere at Versailles, particularly in the ballet and at balls. This gallery explores the “Camp Eden” of Versaillles.
“Camp people are born in a Hall of Mirrors and never find their way out of it”
