Beau Ideal
The Beau Ideal is a nineteenth century notion of male beauty frequently shown in statues. It emphasized “youthful athleticism” and often had homoerotic undertones. Ancient Greek figures were the typical subject for the Beau Ideal, including Hermes and Antonious. This queer aesthetic paved the way for more modern iterations of Camp and queerness.
