Exhibition and Gala
From May 9 to September 8, 2019, the Costume Institue at
the Metropolitan Museum of Art displayed an exhibit curated by Andrew Bolton titled “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” The exhibit traces the history and origins of Camp, citing Sontag and other Camp scholars like aesthete and writer Oscar Wilde and playwright Christopher Isherwood. It contained more than 250 objects spanning from the seventeenth century to the present. The exhibit had several galleries: The Beau Ideal, Camp as a Verb, Camp as an Adjective, Camp as a Noun, Isherwoodian Camp, Sontagian Camp, Failed Seriousness, and Camp Eye.
Every year, the First Monday In May is the Met Gala,
a star studded dinner and ball held by Vogue and The Met. Every year, the celebrity guests are encouraged to dress like the theme of the Exhibit. Therefore, in 2019, viewers got to see many different conceptions of Camp, as interpreted by celebrities and their stylists.
