A Message From Mayor Tom Schoaf
This edition’s theme, “Park Life,” along with our Centennial Celebration, prompted me to reflect
on our shared lives in the Park. I was speaking with a resident after the opening ceremonies of
our recent celebration. She had guests in from the east coast who attended Friday night’s event.
Her friend commented that she was surprised; it appeared that Mayberry was still in existence.
After fighting back my initial reaction, I realized that, while not necessarily intended, this
was actually a compliment. While murders and shootings are up across so many cities such
as Chicago, St. Louis, Philadelphia and Washington DC, we have weeks go by in Litchfield
Park in which there are no reports of any criminal activity. In a normal week, there are only
a handful of minor offenses. While too many cities are in disrepair, for the most part, our
City is beautiful with its wide streets lined with mature trees, bushes, shrubs and grass. While
too many of our nation’s children are not able to play in their neighborhoods or enjoy local
parks, our kids routinely play in our neighborhoods and we have great parks accessible within a short walk in all of our
neighborhoods. While too many school districts are failing across our country, we have very high performing districts, along
with multiple strong educational choices for our children. How many individuals live in a community anchored by a world
class resort with three championship golf courses? How many individuals live in a community with the number or variety of
festivals and celebrations that we routinely enjoy? I could continue, but I think my point should already be clear: “Park Life”
offers us a rich, small-town environment centered on family and friends.
Your Council, and our Staff, are dedicated to maintaining and improving “Park Life,” which we share with you. You can
help us accomplish this goal by sharing your thoughts and concerns with us. You can reach me at City Hall, 623-935-5033,
