business.
Throsby Creek and its tributaries such as Styx Creek, collect stormwater from the major part of central
Newcastle and drain it to Newcastle Harbour.
The catchment of the creek covers an area of approximately 3,000 hectares and few places within Throsby
catchment remain in a relatively natural state. The majority of the drainage travels in concrete stormwater
drains before reaching the creek.
The Blackbutt Reserve area is the one exception to this is . It is one of the largest remaining natural bushland
pockets in the City and this reserve includes the headwaters of the catchment.
The lower section of the creek flows through the inner city suburbs of Islington, Wickham, Maryville and
Carrington and has been the site of major restoration works in recent years.
In this area we find mangrove forests located along the creeks boundaries.
Downstream of the Tighes Hill and Maryville areas, the creek becomes tidal .
Where once the river banks were lined with industries such as wool stores, ship building and mining areas it is
now home to marinas, boating , recreational walkers and creek side residences.
In pre European times it was home to aboriginal families.
