About Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services
Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services is a 218-bed hospice providing specialist care for people with a wide range of needs
from rehabilitation to end of life care. is high quality, person-centred loving care is provided both on-site in one of our
truly special facilities; Harold’s Cross Hospice and Blackrock Hospice as well as in the local community.
We treat our patients like family, and the hospice as their home. Our core values of Human Dignity, Compassion, Justice,
Quality and Advocacy, both for our patients and their families, are at the heart of everything we do.
Patients like Michael Dormer, one of our Palliative Care patients.
It was an honour for us to get to know Michael. A truly incredible man, he put everyone at ease. Despite a painful cancer
– he was always brimming with love, insight and reassurance.
No matter what was happening with his health, Michael always looked back on his life with a palpable joy.
“ e night I met my wife, Helen, that was it for me. I saw her. I met her. I fell for her. We danced all night. Waltzes, quick-
steps, tangos.”
ey married in 1961, and had two wonderful daughters, followed by six equally wonderful grandchildren. With pride
in his eyes, Michael spoke of them always, family clearly being the thing that lit up his life the most.
roughout his time with us, Michael lived every moment to the fullest, playing the piano and spending time with that
family he loved so much. To Michael, his past and present were clearly connected by one positive theme – love.
His attitude to family, life, and ‘end-of-life’, beautifully mirrors the philosophy of care in Our Lady’s Hospice & Care
Services, which was something Michael always appreciated.
“A doctor will come in that door and he or she will hold my hand and look into my eyes and talk with me,
not at me.”
Michael speaks passionately about why people should support the hospice.
“It’s very rare to nd a place of this quality. Everyone here – they can’t do enough for you.
But they desperately need funds.”
