James Cagney Seanfhocail (Old Saying)
Coilleáin de aon ál iad
of southern kingdoms. According to legend, it was dug They are birds of a feather
out by a great black boar using its tusks. Rising up to 9ft Lough Gill
(2.75) meters high in some border counties, the Dyke
appears sporadically marking it's former boundary.
Uncannily it follows a route close to the modern
boundary between Northern Ireland and the Republic.
Locals also attest to the Dyke as marking a border
between dialects where the harder northern accent
softens into a mellower Irish brogue.
One famous descendant of a Leitrim man is Hollywood's
James Cagney (1899-1986). Cagney's father was James
Francis Cagney, a descendant of the Leitrim O'Caignes.
Here in Leitrim you can find Irelands earliest salmon
river – the first salmon caught by rod 17 times in the
past 20 years has come from the River Drowes near
Lough Melvin, at Tullaghan. Leitrim also has several
beautiful lakes of which the best known are Lough Gill,
Lough Allen, Lough Garadice, Lough Glenade, Lough
Rynn, Lough MacNean and Lough Melvin whose
western shores are part of County Leitrim. Many
smaller lakes of Leitrim are also picturesque.
