As we have seen, these ancient peoples saw spirit in all things – rock, tree
and stone. It is therefore no surprise to us that they would have attributed a
personafication of Goddess to the land itself. Indeed the identification of the
Irish land with a female figure continued in many cultural forms up to the
present day. Ireland is a motherland and Germany, a Fatherland. Most of us
do not give a second thought to such distinctions of gender in terms of out
land. In ancient Ireland as we can see, it was a n integral part of the common
understanding. The earth is not merely dumb and inanimate clay it is a living
entity somehow beyond the realms of comprehension in our rational world
view.
Today many things can interfere with the healthy flow of energy across
our landscape. In the region identified with this Project, Marko identified
several: the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland, the walls around
the ancient sanctuary of Derry, the destruction of many of the old megalithic
structures, military forts and television masts.
As part of the project, a number of granite pillar stones were erected across
the landscape, to stimulate the energy lines and help in the healing of this
particular landscape – a method similar to acupuncture needles. Each stone
was carved with a different “cosmogramme” an energy pattern designed to
reflect and strengthen the energy in that particular place. In the centre of
Derry city where pillars would be impractical, bronze plates have been set
into the flag-stones.
Here, the healing is an ongoing process and the stones involved are meant to be visited. They are physically beautiful
and each has been absorbing something of the energy it is intended to stimulate. Over time these stones have become an
important and integral element of the living landscape. By appreciating and acknowledging them we can contribute our
energy and become a part of the healing process that has been initiated through them in this troubled part of Ireland.
