School - my youth
written in large red letters: "Monaco, it's time to pull
yourself together", which I did straight away.
In practice, we had maths lessons several times a week.
After two or three lessons, he would give the first written
tests. The marks were often accompanied by the comment:
"Go and find Dad in Year 1". The vast majority had 2, 3 and
4 out of 10. The few students who scored above 5 were
quickly identified and were practically the only ones still
entitled to any consideration.
His lessons always followed the same pattern: a theory
session and then the exercises on the blackboard. During the
exercise session, the start was always the same: "piste-1
Monaco, piste-2 Ciccone ". The teacher would say what the
57
exercises were, and the solving would begin, without
hesitation. At the slightest pause, you could hear his
sarcastic voice: "So Monaco, haven't we studied? I still
shudder. If you wanted to succeed, studying was essential. It
helped me a lot in my engineering studies.
During this period of study - I was between 16 and 19, a large
part of my youth - I met for the first time the girl who was to
become my future wife. It was the kind of youth that we
sometimes call carefree. We left each other, found each
other, left each other again, and found each other again.
Each time we broke up, it was a little heartbreak:
to live I to feel!
