                Teacher Instructions





                Explicit Instruction, Guided Instruction, Independent Practice, and Exit Ticket


                SEL Standard 3A.2b: Demonstrate knowledge of how social norms aˆect decision making

                and behavior.


                Explicit Instruction (I Do)

                Teacher: Read the following passage to the students and discuss.
                The family that you grew up in has influenced your decision making and behaviors. For
                example, if your parents graduated from college, it’s more than likely that you will also
                graduate from college. Your friends also influence your behaviors. For example, if your best
                friend does not like playing with a certain classmate, you may not want to play with that

                classmate either. Sometimes, we behave inappropriately or do not make the best decision
                due to things learned from our family and friends. You are going to learn how to demonstrate
                knowledge of how social norms aˆect your decision making and behaviors.



                Teacher: Read the following story aloud to students—or create your own story about why
                you became a teacher. Then discuss how families can influence children’s decisions.
                Ms. Jones’s mother and father were both teachers. Her father suggested that she go to school
                to become a teacher. As a result, Ms. Jones followed her father’s guidance.



                Guided Instruction (We Do)
                Teacher: Ask the students to share stories that are examples of them making decisions

                based upon the influence of family and friends.


                Independent Practice (You Do)
                Teacher: Assign the students to cooperative groups. Ask them to write a personal story
                about one person in each group whose decisions and behaviors were influenced by family

                and friends.


                Exit Ticket (Assessment)

                Teacher: Assign the students to write a personal story about how their decisions and
                behaviors have been influenced by family and friends.
