                Teacher Instructions

Explicit Instruction, Guided Instruction, Independent Practice, and Exit Ticket

                Explicit Instruction (I Do)
Teacher: Read the following story aloud to the students.
At the end of the school day, David punched Donald in the head while they were walking out
of school. David was also calling him names and making Donald feel unsafe. Donald did not
tell his teacher that he was being bullied by David, but he did tell his mother that he wanted to
transfer to another school to avoid David.
Teacher Explanation: A solution to Donald’s problem is that he could have asserted himself
and told David he would not accept being bullied. Donald also could have told Ms. Jones,
and/or his mother, that David was bullying him. Furthermore, Ms. Jones would have informed
David’s primary teacher. Consequently, David would have had a parent teacher conference,
after-school detention, or up to three days of suspension. David and Donald would have been
informed that they did not adhere to the school’s anti-bullying policy. As a result, the school
will ensure that David and Donald learn social emotional skills to repair the harm and prevent
any further bullying. A plan will also be developed and implemented to restore a sense of
                safety for Donald.

                Guided Instruction (We Do)
Teacher: Ask the students to share personal accounts of bullying or choose a character from
a well-known story who has been bullied. Discuss the possible solutions to bullying and the
positive consequences of self-advocating (standing up for oneself).

                Independent Practice (You Do)
Teacher: Assign the students to work in cooperative groups. Ask the students to write about
a student or character who has been bullied and list the possible solutions for being bullied.
Discuss the positive consequences of self-advocating.

                Exit Ticket (Assessment)
Teacher: Assign the students to write about themselves, a friend or family member, or a
character who has been bullied. Ask the students to write the possible solutions the victim
could use and document how the victim could self-advocate.

Lesson 8 Guided Instruction Answer Key
The possible solutions to bullying are speaking up for yourself and saying, “I will not accept
you bullying me,” helping someone who is being bullied, and telling an adult at school or
home about the bullying. The consequences of self-advocating, or standing up for yourself,
will result in the bully receiving a parent teacher conference, after-school detention, or up to
three days of suspension. The bully will also learn empathy to prevent them from bullying.
Lastly, the person who was bullied will feel safe at school
