P. 24
Greetings!
On behalf of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus (ILBC), representing elected officials from
the State of Illinois, we are pleased to welcome everyone gathered for the 25th Annual Chicago
Football Classic game at Soldier Field!
Since 1997, the Chicago Football Classic has been inspiring African American high school and
college students to achieve educational excellence. The first game, between Mississippi Valley
State and Southern University was the result of a group of local businessmen’s efforts, who saw
the need to convey to the African American community the importance of higher education and
the benefits of attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Each year since, their endeavor has grown and left a larger impact on the African American
community through its consistent focus on education. Game day brings a week-long array of
activities and a large family reunion setting to Chicago’s landmark, Soldier Field.
We commend Larry Huggins, Everett Rand, and Tim Rand for their dedication to preserving the
academic, cultural, and athletic traditions of historically black colleges and universities, as well as
for the generous financial support they provide local high school students.
Good luck to this year’s competing schools – Mississippi Valley State University and Central
State University. On behalf of the people of Illinois, we offer our best wishes for an enjoyable and
memorable occasion.
Sincerely,
Illinois Legislative Black Caucus
