nutrients was found to stimulate plant growth parameters. The study has shown that green biomass can be
used to improve the quality of crop residue compost by adding activator during the composting process.

             Introduction
Jatropha curcas is widely planted as a hedge or living fence to protect field crops. Jatropha oil cake
obtained as a by-product after oil extraction from Jatropha kernels. The jatropha oil cake nutritional value
and its utilization as animal feed has to be explored because of the presence of toxic principles such as curcin
and phorbol ester. Hence, a study was conducted to assess the nutritive value, detoxification of the jatropha
oil cake and the feasibility of inclusion in the diet of goat.
             Materials and methods

Jatropha oil cake was collected from Information and Demonstration Centre, Biofuel park, Hassan,
Karnataka and analyzed for nutrient composition. The jatropha oil cake samples were taken randomly and
analyzed for the dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), crude fibre (CF), ether extract (EE) and total ash
(TA) (AOAC, 2000). Calcium was determined using spectrophotometric method (Tietz, 1995). Phosphorus
was determined calorimetrically using Ammonium Vanadate (AOAC, 2000). The mycotoxins (AFB , AFB ,
                                                                                                     1

AFG , AFG , zearalenone, ocharotoxin, T-2 toxin and citrinin) was analysed by running multitoxin assay

(Tapia, 1985). The mycotoxin levels were expressed as ppm on dry matter basis. To detoxify the anti nutritional
substances raw jatropha oil cake is treated with 2 % calcium hydroxide solution as per Rakshit et al (2007).
A feeding trial was conducted in twelve Boer cross bred goats (6-months old) for a period of 90 days
with treated Jatropha oil cake. The kids were randomly distributed into two treatments (T and T ) in such a

             Results
The proximate composition of Jatropha oil cake is presented in table 1.
