National level e-symposium on “Agroforestry system for augmenting livestock
productivity and empowering resource poor rural farmers”
nigrum, Phyllanthus amarus, Ocimum tenuiflorum, Boyophyllum Pinnatum, Mimosa pudica, Adhatoda
vasica, Vitex negundo, performed during all the seasons. Based on this survivability study and performance,
six species have been selected for further field cultivation and evaluation.
Conclusion
Ocimum sanctum, Ocimum canum, Alpinia calcarata, Chrysopogon zizanioides, Adhatoda vasica and
Vitex negundo were selected based on the performance of the crop in the model field. Hence, for Kancheepuram
region the above herbs may be recommended in the border rows of coconut.

Introduction
A rich biodiversity of avifauna is indicative of a healthy eco-system. Livestock farms in general are
good habitats for - bird species, as they provide sufficient resources in the form of nesting and feed. Further,
the restricted enclosures provide protection for poaching and other anthropogenic disturbances. The trees,
shrubs and grasses are used to build their nests. The variety of insects available from the organic wastes and
water bodies, small reptiles and mammals existing in the region and flowers and fruits provide nutritious feed
for the birds. Thus, a complete food chain dependent on these feed resources, is expected to function with
smaller birds, waders, and large predators. In fact, several bird species form a good symbiotic relationship
with the cattle and sheep grazing in the farm. Cattle egrets and drongos are often seen along with herds of
grazing animals, as they get easy access to the insects while these animals graze. To an extent, the animals are
also rid of ectoparasites like ticks by egrets. The present investigation was carried out to understand the bird
biodiversity that existed in an ecosystem associated with a multispecies livestock farm.
