Zephyrs capture first-ever state title
The 2019-20 season was extremely rewarding for the
Mahtomedi Zephyrs boys hockey team. First, the
Zephyrs won their 4th consecutive section championship,
fifth in six years and the 12th in the history of the
program, when they defeated South St. Paul 5-1 in the
Section 4A final at Roseville Arena. In the photo to the left

Next, in the 2020 Class A state tournament, the Zephyrs
were seeded as the No. 4 team behind Warroad,
Cathedral and Hermantown. In the quarter-finals, a four-
goal third period propelled the Zephyrs to 5-2 victory over
Delano and their 3rd straight state semi-final appearance.
In the semi-finals, the Zephyrs defeated top-seeded
Warroad 5-1 in front of a record crowd of almost 13,000
at the Xcel Energy Center. The win advanced the
Zephyrs to their first-ever state title game.
Then, in a dramatic, overtime thriller, the Zephyrs won
their first-ever state championship (photo below) with a 3-
2 victory over the powerful Hermantown Hawks. The
Zephyrs combined great team defense, outstanding
goaltending and timely scoring to bring home the first
state hockey championship in the 66-year history of the
boys hockey program.
