JUNIORS’ REPORT
Our 2017-18 season is now behind us and it is time to reflect on what has been an outstanding season for many reasons.
Firstly, on the field we had three Junior premiership winning teams. Congratulations to our U16 Gold,
U12 Purple and U11 Orange teams for winning your respective competitions. Being a very large club and holding true to our participation over results policy, we spread our talent across many teams. So for three of our teams to win premierships is a great achievement.
Well done also to our U16 Blue, U12 Red and U11 White teams for reaching the semi finals. In fact the U12 Red team made it to the grand final, playing against our Orange team. It was a fantastic day and both Barry McDonald and I had the honour of umpiring in an all WPHCCC grand final – I believe a first where both teams and umpires came from our great club!
In total this season we had 34 junior teams. It is great that we continue to keep our team numbers up and the number of players coming up from Kanga’s each season continues to grow. Along with the fact that over 25 of our boys played some form of Seniors cricket this year (either a full season or helped out when needed) all points to a strong club going forward.
Another indicator of a strong and healthy club, is the record number of players that we were able to
add to the Arthur Souter Shield. What this means is that 23 of our players had played their junior cricket continuously with the club, right through from Kanga to the Under 16s. This is a phenomenal retention rate. Check out the back cover for photos of our Arthur Souter recipients at presentation day, and when they were starting out in Kanga cricket 10 years ago.
Every year we award a number of perpetual trophies to some well deserved recipients.
• John Coulthard Trophy (Junior Player of the Year) – Dylan Bish • Charles Booth Memorial Award (U13s) – James Stuart-Gray
• Ross Anderson Trophy (U11s) – Blake Morrison
• Volunteer of the Year (U8-U11) – Ratna Siva
• Volunteer of the Year (U12-U16) – Andrew Morris
Congratulations to all our perpetual trophy recipients for 2017/18 – all very well deserved.
There were a number of fantastic individual performances throughout the season. James Bowen and Luca Bale both achieved a bowling hat-trick. Dylan Bish, Louis Madison-Hanlon, Luchith Thenuwara, Kai Karney and Josh Munro each took five wickets in an innings. Additionally, Ben Dunkerley, Zac Morris, Jonathan Moran and Patrick Dixon all scored centuries.
I’d also like to congratulate Dylan Bish, Matthew Schwartzel and Kai Carney on taking out individual trophies with the association. Dylan was the associations’ best bowler in the U16s taking 17 wickets at an average 9.82. Matthew took out the James Webb Memorial Trophy for the most dismissals by a wicket keeper with 17 dismissals. And Kai was the association’s best bowler in the U12s taking 26 wickets at and average of 6.15. Well done boys!
Looking beyond our association, there were two other great achievements that we became aware of. Naden Cooray plays for the HKHDCA JH Creak Shield team and won the NSWDCA batsman of the year award for amassing 260 runs @65.0. And Cameron Tunks, was not only selected in the NSW Primary Schools Team, but scored a century versus Tasmania in the Nationals. Well done to both of you.
