Dear Colleagues,
This year has, as always, been an active one for the Board. We have had a full year overseeing the provision of education, training, and credentialling, including monthly meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and policy writing all in close collaboration with the Executive.
Firstly, congratulations to the five graduates of 2022 – Justine Proctor, James Campbell, Roma Prangley, Courtney Adams and Joseph Abraham. We commend you all on your efforts in successfully completing the Structured Course in Clinical Perfusion (SCiCP) and Certification Exams!
The SCiCP course had its final intake in February 2022 and continues to run for eight students, who will graduate at various points over the next two years. Ghaz Jabur has been facilitating the course from Auckland and made a point of improving communication and dialogue between students, including introducing drop-in webinar sessions, where students are able to ask questions and get advice on a range of topics related to their learnings. He has achieved this in the midst of welcoming a baby girl to his family this year (congratulations!).
The Master of Science in Extracorporeal Science (MS- ECS) offered by MUSC commenced in August this year, with four students in our region enrolled. The feedback thus far has been very positive, with the online delivery of lectures and tutorials and exams well received by the students and their supervisors. Alex remains in close contact with MUSC to ensure that the course runs smoothly, and students are supported by the Board. We aim to learn from the MUSC experience as we continue to explore opportunities for the delivery of a perfusion degree through a local university in the future. Initial discussions with an Australian university look promising and we look forward to continuing these important conversations regarding the development of a locally delivered course.
The Autotransfusion course has been incredibly successful this year, with 119 students completing the course. This number marks a 45% increase on enrolments from last year and our largest ever yearly intake. Adriano has done an incredible job in administering the course this year and is to be applauded for the improvements made, particularly the roll out of voiceovers and backend processes that have made the role of the course coordinator a much less onerous one.
The Overseas Trained Perfusionist pathway is currently being managed by Wendy and Pat, who have been working together to improve the process. Wendy is devoting her precious time into this project, despite currently being on maternity leave and recently welcoming a baby boy into the family (congratulations!). The Board aim to have the changes finalised by the end of the year streamlining the process for future applicants. Wendy, Pat and the entire Board have invested many hours into ensuring the process is fair and reasonable, assessing and recognising the qualifications of our overseas colleagues, and welcoming them as colleagues.
Thank you to those who have recertified this year, the Board appreciate your timely submissions. Casey has been reviewing the submissions and addressing any difficulties on an individual basis. A reminder to keep track of your CPD for 2022 to ensure you meet the minimum criteria for next years’ recertification and to use the profoma supplied on the ANZCP website, to expedite processing of your application. If you are suffering from a known hardship, please contact the Casey at your earliest opportunity, who will help you work through your options. The Board would like to thank the College Administration Officer, Andrea Hunt, for her continued administrative support and exemplary organisational skills that she brings to all aspects of the College, particularly recertification.
Finally, I would like to thank the members of the Board for their dedication over the past year. Education and credentialling processes would not run as they do without the effort that each member puts in on a regular basis. It may not be obvious how many hours are voluntarily contributed to the causes of the Board, but I can assure you, your efforts have not gone unnoticed. Thank you to Casey Edwards (Secretary), Ghaz Jabur (SCiCP Course Coordinator), Alex Peterson (MUSC Liaison), Patrick O’Neill (member) and Wendy Saad Salib (member), also, a special mention to Adriano Luongo (Autotransfusion Course Coordinator) - I speak on behalf of the perfusion community and say thank you for your commitment to the advancement of perfusion education and credentialling processes in our region. We look forward to next year where new challenges and opportunities await us.
