THE NEXT GENERATION – JAMES CAMPBELL & JESSICA BETTS
James Campbell
Age: 27 years old
Hospital: Royal Melbourne Hospital, Victoria, Australia Hobbies:
Social sports, watching AFL/Cricket, boardgames
Fave snack or hot / cold beverage: Latte (Iced if hot) or a funky craft beer
Five things people don’t know about you:
I'm a twitchy sleeper, have never broken a bone, have a collection of Lego space ships, my first job was working in a fish and chip shop and I had a Wiggles obsession as a child.
The last late night I had....
I was called in for an aortic dissection. The surgeon was using a new graft device to add even more of a challenge in the early hours of the morning!
Best Childhood Memory:
Hard to pick one, but the first time I saw snow was pretty memorable. It was school camp in Grade 6 and we had been taken up to a camp in Howqua near Mt Buller. It was probably closer to ice than snow, but great memories were made flying downhill on a toboggan.
My First Day as a Perfusionist...
Itisallabitofablur, butIgottoseethehowcrazythingscan get on occasion. In the first few days I was helping manage ECMO patients and even got to wean one off (under close supervision)! Definitely a fun and crazy week that had me reaffirming this was the career I wanted.
What drew me to Perfusion?
After finishing my science degree, I had struggled to find a fulfilling career path. What drew me to perfusion was the opportunity to have a career in which every day I get to make a difference and help someone. After my first visit sitting in on a case I found it very fascinating and the heart lung machine seemed like something out of a sci-fi movie!
My favourite area of interest within Perfusion:
A broad topic, but any clinical applications of scientific principles.
Where do you see the future of perfusion? How or what would you like to see?
With recent technological leaps in AI programming it may be possible to see a smart heart lung machine that learns from each case.
Favourite memory from a conference / speaker / most inspirational perfusion -related seminar you went to:
I had the opportunity to visit the company that makes our CPB circuit. It was fascinating to see how much work goes into getting a circuit on the shelves of our pump room.
Name something you appreciate about the team you work in:
My team has been incredibly supportive and patient with me as a trainee and have continued to support me as a recently qualified perfusionist. They are a wealth of knowledge and experience for me continually learn from.
Recent occurrence or story about something that happened recently:
We have just started performing a HIPEC service this year. It’s been a great opportunity to offer our skills to care for another patient group. I’ve enjoyed the challenge of working with a different team and with a new machine.
