Jesus prays in the garden of Gethsemane
Jesus Before the Council
After supper, Jesus and his disciples went to a place called Gethsemane. He told them to sit while he went and prayed. He took Peter, James and John with him. And a great fear came over him. Jesus said, ‘The sorrow in my heart is so great. Stay here. Keep watch.”
Then going on a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed to God, “Father, my Father! All things are possible for you. Take this suffering away from me, yet not what I want, but what you want.”
Then he returned and found the three disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon you are asleep. Can’t you even stay awake for one hour? The
Jesus went away once more, saying the same words then he returned to the disciples and again found them asleep. When he came back the third time, he said to them: “Are you still resting? The hour has come! Look, the Son of Man is now being handed over to the power of sinful men. Get up. Look, here is the man who is betraying me.”
Jesus was arrested and taken to the Sanhedrin.
Jesus was taken to the High Priest’s house where all the chief priests, elders and the teachers of the Law were gathered. Peter followed, at a distance. He sat down with the guards and listened while the chief priests
against Jesus in order to put him to death. Witnesses told false stories about Jesus but none of their stories rang true, so no evidences could be found.
The High Priest stood up in front of them all
and questioned Jesus. He said, “Have you no answer to the accusations brought against you?” But Jesus kept quiet, not saying one word. Again the High Priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed God?”
“I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated on the right of the Almighty and coming with the clouds of Heaven!” replied Jesus. The High Priest tore his robes and exclaimed, “We don’t need any more witnesses! You hear this blasphemy.”
They voted that Jesus was guilty and should be put to death. Some of them, spat on Jesus and blindfolded him and struck him.
