Four Gospels, One Hero
The four Gospels are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Each presents its own particular view of Jesus Christ. The accounts in these books have been handed down via a three stage process. Firstly, the life and teachings of Jesus had to happen. So Jesus, the Son of God had to live and teach at some point in history. Second, after Jesus had left this world, his story had to be told and retold. This oral tradition began with the apostles and spread throughout the world. In many ways, this stage in the process still continues today whenever people speak of Jesus.
The writers of these Gospels selected, summarised and explained different stories from the tradition that existed in their time. Each wrote a slightly different portrayal of Jesus, but all are regarded as true and honest.
How can four portraits all be true and honest?

In each of the spaces below, list three words that each of these people might use to describe you.

The four Gospels give us a very clear view of the person of Jesus and the role he played in our Christ. May we always love and respect these great books and read them with an open mind and heart. For it is the story of Jesus which will inform us about God and our life as Christians. Let us give thanks for these four wonderful accounts of the life and teaching of Jesus Christ.
Amen.
