Two prestigious patrons
The OIV (International Orga- nisation of Vine and Wine) is an international organisation with a scienti c and technical focus and recognised authority in the sector of vine, wine, wine-based drinks, table grapes, raisins and other vine products. On the ba- sis of their recommendations, international standards and guidelines, it promotes the harmonisation and exchange of information and knowled- ge based on a sound scienti- c foundation, with the aim of improving productivity, product safety and quality, and produc- tion and marketing conditions for viticultural products.
The OIV ensures that compe- titions all over the world follow the international standards for tasting.
Four criteria must be met: ap- pearance, bouquet, taste, and overall harmony.
Standard for OIV internati- onal wine competitions
The current standard for in- ternational wine competitions (Oeno 2/94) was established in July 2009 by the 74th General Assembly of the OIV. It replaced the 1975 rules for international wine competitions.
This signi cant work, carried out by the OIV‘s expert „Wine Competitions“ group in colla- boration with the International
Union of Oenologists, enabled the creation of a standard that sets the conditions for carrying out international competitions and allows results to be com- pared using a fair method.
In the European Union, the allocation of awards at com- petitions is subject to the „pro- visions that are recognised or established by the Commission, the member states, or the In- ternational Of ce of Vine and Wine“ (Directive 3201/90 of
16th October 1990, Article 15 (3)).
The approval of internatio- nal competitions by the OIV is therefore
governed by this standard. The Director General of the OIV is responsible for the provisi- on and implementation of all necessary measures. He is also responsible for examining pro- posals for competitions that are to be held under the auspices of the OIV. To monitor these stan- dards, an of cial observer from the OIV is sent to the tasting, who documents, records, and evaluates every step. If there are violations of these stan- dards, the delegate is entitled to cancel the tasting or, in the case of gross violations, as a consequence of the report that will then be issued, patronage will no longer be granted to the organiser the following year.
The UIOE (International Union of Oenologists) brings together under one roof a variety of na- tional professional associations relating to viticulture and wi- nemaking. The highly regarded association is now the mouth- piece of the most important professional wine associations around the world. The UIOE sees its duty as the promotion and protection of both the profes- sional and economic interests of oenologists and related pro- fessions.
