In the current art scene, the American artist Wayne Ensrud must be mentioned when it comes to serious paintings on wine bottles. For the 2001 Napa Valley Wine Auction, he painted 20 Jeroboam bottles from the Robert Mondavi Carbernet Sauvignon Reserve. They were vintages from 1981 to 2000. The bottles including the contents were sold for 260,000 USD.
Artist labels for wine are well-known. Think of Chateau Mouton Rothschild from Bordeaux or Fattoria Nittardi from Tuscany. But it is not only the label that is the ‘canvas’, rather the whole bottle becomes the canvas. The Korean artist Howe Jun Jang goes further by not only painting empty wine bottles, but also making sculptures out of them. For the third time she has exhibited such works of art with great resonance.
When the artist became a wine lover, she found it a shame to simply throw away empty bottles of different shapes and sizes. Since for her wine was not just an alcoholic beverage, but rather something to comfort, stabilise, or sooth her, she wanted to try to express this ‘message’ in the form of wine bottle sculptures. For her, there is nothing better than drinking a glass of wine with music after exhausting work. Whether it’s a Merlot or Pinot Noir. Because wine bottles have the drawback of being fragile, she asks that her works of art are treated with care, just like women. She nds it very unfortunate that large bottles of wine are hard to nd in Korea and hopes to exhibit at some point in Europe.
