Seeking and Earning Ambitious Educational Goals
Visually Impaired Coordinator, Carolyn Mason, began working
with Harley during his kindergarten year in school. She had been
approached by several of Harley's teachers who had concerns that he
was having trouble seeing. She would become his educational guru
throughout his entire public school experience.
Harley was enrolled in regular education, so it was necessary to
have an LST (Local Support Team) meeting to discuss the need for an
assessment that Harley required special education. Most parents
facing similar issues are not eager to have a “special education” label
put on their children's records which might somehow limit them in the
future. Beth's personal experiences with Harley indicated to her that
Harley was a gifted learner early in life—especially in math. At three
