Why Test for Heavy Metals as a Health Screening
Health Risks:
Heavy metals can accumulate in the body over time, leading to a variety of health problems. For example, lead exposure can cause cognitive impairment and developmental delays in children, while mercury exposure can cause neurological problems and kidney damage.
One study found that blood lead levels above 5 micrograms per deciliter (μg/dL) can cause significant health problems, including decreased IQ and behavioral problems in children (CDC, 2012). Similarly, exposure to mercury at levels above 1 μg/L can cause adverse health effects (WHO, 2011).
