LESSON #1 - Setting the Scene
Even though everything in Sleepy Hollow has been trapped in Halloween, the residents still manage to live pretty ordinary lives. They go to school, church, restaurants and summer camp. In Wand- Paper-Scissors, much of the action revolves around the Annual Scary Talent Show. Most schools hold talent contests.
• What made this talent show di erent from your school talent show?
• Would you say the Harry’s performance was scary? Why or why not?
• Even though Harry’s performance was not scary in the same obvious way some of the more Halloweeny acts were, Rabbit’s spectacular ying act might have been scary to some folks—maybe even Harry It was Harry’s rst magical experience with Rabbit and Harry was de nitely not in control Would this event have frightened any of the kids in your group?
Bible Bu

Scary sounds are not unusual in Sleepy Hollow, but in Chapter one Harry is walking home and he hears SLISH, SLASH He’s frightened by it Why do you think this particular scary sound was more frightening to him than others?
It could be that this sound is so di erent from the ordinary Sleepy Hollow sounds
It could be that he had a sense of dread or danger You could ask if any of your kids have ever felt danger or dread What was that like? What did they do?
