TPC Summerlin Unveils
Much Anticipated
Renovations
Summerlin is pleased to unveil a six-month
renovation project carried out on bunkers
TPC and perimeter landscape, improving the
infrastructure, playability and environmental footprint of the 27 year-
old PGA TOUR owned and operated golf facility.
Original designer Bobby Weed, along with PGA TOUR Design
and Construction Services, developed the plan, which included both
competitive and conservational elements. The bunkers, which had not
been updated since the facility’s opening in 1991, were reshaped and
realigned to match the athleticism of the modern player and provide
the best possible playing quality. Many areas of the course, particularly
around the perimeter, were converted to their natural state.
“It’s amazing to remember the course when it first opened in 1991
and compare it to today,” said Garfield Ogilvie, former director of sales
and marketing who recently passed away. “When TPC Summerlin was
originally built, we didn’t have the mature trees seen on the course today.
The enhancements were designed so that players will be forced to play
strategically around all these obstacles, which is not typical in the Las
Vegas area and is one of our defining features.”
In addition to the competitive recommendations, membership
preferences also played a major role in the project plan, aiding in key
decisions for factors such as the type of sand used in bunkers. Members
will be the first to experience the updates before some of the best players
in the world test them at the PGA TOUR’s annual Shriners Hospitals for
Children Open in October.
