What a Christian Believes
Jesus was in the water when He was baptised. Did John the
Baptist pour water over Jesus as He stood there, or did Jesus
go under the water?
At the beginning of this study, the literal meaning of the word
BAPTISE was shown to be:- to dip, dip into, cleanse by
washing, an ablution and concluded with to cover
thoroughly.
There is the strongest indication from this that an individual
would dip under rather than be splashed, when being
baptised.
To whom is it to be adminstered?
This question goes to the heart of all the arguments that have
raged about different modes of baptism.
Jesus commanded his disciples in Matthew 28 v19 'Go
therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising
them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy
Spirit.'
There is a similar command in Mark 16 v15 'Go into all the
world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who
believes and is baptised will be saved...'
These and other Bible passages link repenting with
believing, believing with being baptised and baptism with
salvation.
Some have come to believing that Salvation comes through
believing and baptism together, not believing alone. From
this, the idea has come that God regenerates a person at
baptism. Those who have believed this have had their
children baptised, trusting that their children will believe later.
