Gold Coast condo sells for $10.1 million, top price of the year to date

The former CEO of Fortune Brands sold a Gold Coast condo for a little more than $10.1 million on Friday, the
Chicago area’s highest price of the year so far and the latest indication that the once-saggy downtown condo
market is regaining its appeal.
It's the highest recorded sale price for a Chicago-area home so far in 2025, although as Crain’s reported
Friday, three lakefront mansions in Winnetka are all under contract at higher prices.
With this sale at the top of the list, the eight highest-priced home sales of the year so far in Chicago and the
suburbs are downtown condos, and the tenth is a Gold Coast mansion. The only top sale so far this year that is
outside the downtown neighborhoods is the Winnetka mansion where the Christmas classic “Home Alone” was
filmed. It sold for $5.5 million in January.
Bruce Carbonari, who in 2011 retired as CEO of Fortune Brands, and his wife, Kate, told Crain’s last summer when
they were putting the condo up for sale that they are spending more time in Detroit, where they have grandchildren,
and at their home in Florida and no longer got much use out of their Chicago condo.
