THE PROVENANCE…
Built in 1928 by famed architect, Andrew Rebori of Rebori, Dewey and Wentworth Architects, this
fine building was built in the classic tradition with 14 stories of red brick and limestone with classical
references and details. The building features a two-story, 18-room penthouse on its top. The
remaining 12 full floor homes were lavish, even by the standards of the day. The 30’ Living Room
contained one of each residence’s two wood burning fireplaces. Frederick Stock, conductor of the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra, purchased one apartment and his daughter purchased another, wooed
perhaps by the extensive soundproofing promises of the designers and the spacious floor plans. The
plans were so opulent, they provoked Al Chase of the Chicago Tribune to unusually sardonic prose.
1325 had water purifiers “for we could hardly expect our Gold Coasters to drink or dine on chlorine
flavored lake water”. Chase also decided that the circular marble entry Lobby on Astor was meant to
“assure visitors that they are not entering a common variety” type of building. Given the building’s
scale and finish, any such misconception was hardly likely.

Today, 1325 North Astor remains home to many high profile Chicago families who desire a private,
low key and service oriented building, to which they can retreat, entertain and raise their families in
a homelike atmosphere with close proximity to Lake Michigan, Lincoln Park, Goudy Children’s
Park, excellent schools and everything that Chicago has to offer!
