THE VISION…
After living in a high rise condominium downtown, the Owners were ready for a change, but did not want to
move more than a mile or two away. After looking at more than 50 houses, they found the 1900 block of
Cleveland to be the absolute ideal location to live without the hustle and bustle of the city and the noise of
ambulances and fire engines, but yet there is easy access to Michigan Avenue and the Loop.
Not only was location important to them, but they knew they did not want a “cookie cutter” spec home, and
desired a home they could make their own with plenty of light and space in which to raise their six-year-old
daughter and to entertain friends and family.
They proceeded to fall in love with the exterior façade of the 1800’s home and most especially with the extra
wide and deep lot and decided that 1930 North Cleveland was, indeed, the place for them!
After their purchase, they entered into a collaboration with their architectural and design team, in order to
seamlessly add on to the existing house and to restore the façade, but also to restore and renovate the interior.
The Owner’s first project was to bring light into the middle of the house. A small bedroom was removed to open
up the front Living Room and a beautiful elliptical staircase with an oval skylight was added to allow sunlight to
pour into the stucco over masonry home. They extended the house ten feet back into the lot and also restructured
the house locating the main entrance and public spaces on the second floor to allow even more light into the home.
They engaged Doug Hoerr, Chicago’s renowned landscape architect, to create a beautiful garden with plenty of
room for dining al fresco and for their small daughter to have plenty of space to play and enjoy outdoor family
fun.
Their “wish list” was fulfilled and their dream home became a reality. The family has thoroughly enjoyed the
fabulous Lincoln Park lifestyle ever since.
