“One thing I say to my clients is, take
as long as you need to make the deci-
sion to sell,” says Janet Owen, top pro-
ducing real estate agent in Chicago.
“But once you’ve made the decision,
then you should act accordingly.” The
only exception to the rule is, don’t put
your house on the market between
Thanksgiving and Christmas—though if the home is already up for sale,
don’t bother taking it off, either. “I have made some of my best sales in
December,” she says. “If someone’s out looking in December, they’re
serious. They need a house.” Historically, things also pick up dramatical-
ly in January. Though that didn’t happen in 2005, this year is different.
“The phones are ringing, properties are selling,” Owen says. “Contrary to
what everyone is saying about the market, I see people willing to spend
$1 million and up.”
