STEP 1
RUBBER ROOM MEETING
Many years ago, I was helping the Pilot Life Insurance Company of Greensborough, North Carolina, design new product illustration software. After a couple of days of discussion, the actuary said,
“I feel like I’m in a rubber room. Everything we ask for; Art says we can have!”
It was a fixed cost project, yet I was telling them they could have anything they wanted in the solution.
At the time, I had no idea how I was going to accomplish some of the things they wanted. But that didn’t matter. My first job was to help them envision their perfect solution without limitation.
I ended up delivering every function they asked for. It took some creativity during the development phase to accomplish. But I would never have delivered what I did without first letting their imagination run wild. Only they could envision the perfect solution for them.
